Pelvic Floor Physiotherapy
We offer

Pelvic Floor Physiotherapy Services in Geelong

Pelvic Floor Physiotherapy is a specialised form of Physiotherapy focusing on the muscles and structures in the pelvic region

Healthy pelvic floor muscles need to be able to contract strongly, respond quickly and hold for long periods of time. They also must be able to relax well for passing urine, emptying the bowel, sexual activity and giving birth. Some people may have pelvic floor muscles which are weak, while others may have pelvic floor muscles which are working too hard (tight and/or painful muscles). Either can contribute to disturbance in bladder, bowel or sexual function. Many people have difficulty learning how to use these muscles well because they are inside and we can’t see them working.

Pelvic Floor Physiotherapy involves taking a detailed history of your symptoms and concerns, alongside assessment of your pelvic floor muscles. This allows your Pelvic Floor Physiotherapist to identify both lifestyle and muscular factors contributing to your pelvic health issues. Assessment of your pelvic floor muscles can include internal vaginal or rectal examination, or real time ultrasound assessment. You do not have to undergo any assessment if you do not feel comfortable, and we will work with you to provide options that best suit your comfort level. Treatment will often involve teaching you how to activate your pelvic floor muscles, strengthening weak muscles and relaxing tense ones, as well as guidance with making changes to your lifestyle that may support improved pelvic health.

Our pelvic floor physiotherapy services respect your autonomy and provide options that best suit your comfort level.

What to

expect during your visit

During your visit, our experienced pelvic floor physiotherapist may offer an internal examination as part of the assessment process. This examination involves a gentle and respectful assessment of the pelvic floor muscles by inserting a gloved finger into the vagina or rectum. It can provide valuable insights into muscle tone, strength, and coordination.

However, we want to reassure you that this examination is not mandatory. We respect your right to make informed decisions about your healthcare. If you prefer not to have an internal examination, we will work with you to explore alternative assessment methods and develop a treatment plan that aligns with your preferences. Alternative assessment options include:

A safe and painless imaging method that uses sound waves to visualize the pelvic floor muscles in real-time, allowing for assessment of muscle movement and coordination.

Comprehensive discussions and questionnaires help us gather information about your symptoms, medical history, and lifestyle factors that may contribute to your pelvic floor concerns.

Our goal is to provide a safe and supportive environment where you feel comfortable and empowered throughout your pelvic floor physiotherapy journey. Your well-being and choices matter to us, and we are committed to tailoring our approach to meet your individual needs and comfort level.
